Teenage Pregnancy in Relation to Abortion Rates in Canada (1990-2005)Question Do teenage pregnancy rates effect abotion rates in Canada throughout 1990-2005?HypothesisI believe that over the course of the selected 15 years (1990-2005) that as teenage pregnancy rates change, abortion rates will change in a similar matter as well.Information: There are many risks which are taken in teenage pregnancies. Babies of teenagers are more likely to have low birth weights, and may also suffer from other health problems. Not only the babies, but also the teenage mothers themselves have high risk factors for developing anemia, hypertension (high blood pressure), renal disease (kidney failure), eclampsia (seizures which occur during pregnancy) and depression. Teenage pregnancy also has negative economic affects. By having a child at such a young age and taking on the responsibilites as a mother, it can cause a reduction in educational success and reduce the chances of acheiving a job with a profitable income. As well, most teenage mothers do not have a partner who can contribute to a household income.Abortion is a very touchy subject and offends many people. In Canada, the Supreme Court uplifted the abortion law in 1988 so abortion was once again legal. It was put in place in 1898, which was the first criminal law to be passed by the Parliament of Canada. It stated that it was prohibited to sell, distribute or use any form of contraceptives. In May of 1970, 35 women chained themselves to the Parlimentary Gallery located in Ottawa for two days for their abortion rights. The abortion law was uplifted because it violoated section 7 of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. This states that women have the right of "life, liberty and security of person."
Sampling TechniqueThe sampling technique which i used was cluster sampling. Cluster sampling is used to divide natural groupings of a population into groups or 'clusters' and a sample is then taken from the selected groups. BiasSince the data I collected was obtained from Statistics Canada, I would say that there would be no bias.Hidden VariablesAs teenage pregnancy decreases after 1998, abortion rates also decrease possibly because the awareness of contraceptives has increased.
